Fire Resistance Test Standard for Passive Fire Protection Cover


The essence of the fire protection cover is to control the temperature rise of the actuator inside the cover under the condition of fire, that is when under highest temperature of the environment or highest temperature of the actuator when it is running, it will not exceed failure temperature of the actuator within 30 minutes, so as to ensure that the actuator will not fail.


With UL1709 standard, the fire protection cover needs to ensure that the temperature of the actuator will not exceed 30-40℃ within 30 minutes in a 1093℃ liquid hydrocarbon fire (the maximum temperature in the general environment is around 40℃, and 70-80℃ is the failure temperature of the actuator).

Fire protection covers are widely used in offshore platforms, mobile oil/gas production ships, and onshore petrochemical plants which are certified by Classification Society Certification. Since it is difficult to test the performance of fire protection covers  through actual working conditions, the actual performance of the product is mainly guaranteed by the public, authoritative and professional classification society certification in the world.


At present, according to the difficulty of fire prevention, there are two types of classification society certifications that comply with UL1709/ISO22899-1.

1. Certification which is suitable for structural Steel Jet Fire Protection System. Due to the regular shape of the tubular structure of structural steel, the basis for fire protection design calculation is HP/A. There are many manufacturers who have obtained this type of type certification, but the scope of application of this certificate is for passive fire protection with regular shapes similar to structural steel. It is mainly used for fire protection of the main support structure of the offshore platform.

2. Certification which is suitable for actuator with enclosure system. The certification category of the classification society is ESDV/Actuator Fire Protection Enclosure System, the fire protection calculation of the actuator is very complicated, which is completely different from the fire protection calculation method of structural steel. It is very difficult to achieve the fire protection effect, and the certification of fire protection cover for enclosures system is extremely difficult, so it is very difficult to obtain evidence.
